Hebe Haven Yacht Club have always taken an active role in participating in and contributing to the local community. From supporting the indigenous villagers of Pak Sha Wan Bay to fund raising for Hong Kong charities and organizations.
THE 24 HOUR DINGHY RACE FOR CHARITY
First raced in 2002, this annual event has raised over $10 million for the “Children’s Cancer Foundation” and other nominated local and children’s charities over the last 14 years. It has become the biggest endurance dinghy race in Hong Kong and the only one of its kind in South East Asia. Competitors come from all over the world, Hong Kong yacht clubs, corporate businesses and schools. A multitude of support comes from Club members, volunteers, parents and the local community. Enlighten – Action for Epilepsy, the Sunnyside Club and the The Intellectually Disabled Education and Advocacy League (IDEAL) have all benefited from this event.
CLEAN PAK SHA WAN DAY
On two occasions the members of the Club have gathered together and cleaned up Pak Sha Wan by collecting rubbish that has accumulated along the shoreline of the entire bay. With help from local villagers and Government departments, over 14 tons of rubbish was once collected in a single day.
Over the years Hebe Haven Yacht Club have had a vision of developing a youth sailing program through our Sail Training Center to encourage children to take up dinghy sailing with the intention of grooming future Club and even national representatives in this sport.
Our plan in 2009 is to introduce the Community Sailing Program to local Government subsidized schools to encourage and offer these children the opportunity to participate in an experience they would not normally be able to have. This program will be free with the intention of offering “Sailing Scholarships” to participating school annually to those kids that have the interest or potential in taking up dinghy sailing.
Hebe Haven organizes and provides resources annually for days out for the disabled on junk trips but in 2009, the Dinghy Sailing Committee will be looking at implementing a "Sailability Program" (sailing for the disabled). This will start with simple and basic sailing programs for groups of people who are less firm both physically and mentally. As we develop the program, together with sponsorship we will be able to invest in specialized equipment and craft which could well lead Hebe Haven into having sailors with the ability to compete at the Paralympic Games in the future.
OTHER COMMUNITY RELATED SERVICES
The Club has provisioned facilities to accommodate local Government departments and interest groups such as the Hong Kong Fire Services department and the local Sea Scouts group that enables them to provide and operate their services to the general public safely and efficiently.
