Dinghy Hire from the Sailing CentreCONDITIONS OF DINGHY HIRE Any Club member wishing to hire out HHYC sailing dinghies must first apply to have their name added to the Approved Helm List. To do this please complete the Approved Helm Application Form, indicating the craft for which you would like to apply for. Forms should be submitted to the Sailing Centre Office with copies of all relevant certificates, documents and logs supporting your application. Should you be required to take a practical test, this can often be done during designated assessment sessions scheduled from time to time. To find out dates of these sessions or other sessions please contact the Sailing Office on + 852 2719 0926 SAIL CHECKS For more inforamtion or booking email sailing@hhyc.org.hk HELMS UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE No child under 14 years of age will be listed as an approved helm proper; however they may be listed to hire dinghies for organised Club racing events, and other events (where safety cover is present). Parents applying on behalf of someone under the age of 18 should submit the form as outlined above. If your child is deemed to have fulfilled the relevant criteria, you will receive an Indemnity Form to complete. On receipt of this completed form the Club will add your child’s name to the Approved Helms List. HIRE OF DINGHIES On arrival at the Sailing Centre: - You should liaise with the SC Administrator, who will assist you with the hiring of craft (signing the boat out). (Please note: no assistance will be given to help rig the vessel.)
- You will be required to show your Membership card to a member of the Sailing Centre staff before you will be allowed to hire a boat.
- You will be required to sign a chit as a deposit, in case of any damage to the boat. This chit will be destroyed if the boat is returned in the same condition in which it left the Sailing Centre.
- On your return to HHYC you should once again liaise with a member of the Sailing Centre staff who will sign the boat in for you, check that the boat has not been damaged, and ensure that all the rigging is stowed properly.
SAFETY - Members can only hire dinghies if they are on the approved helm list for that type of dinghy.
- Buoyancy Aids MUST be worn at all times when on-board a club owned dinghy.
- When using the spinnaker or trapeze the crew must also be approved.
- Any child between 14 and 18 years of age may hire the relevant dinghy without being accompanied, but must leave a parent's/guardian's contact number on the hiring chit, as they sign out the dinghy.
- No one under 14 years of age is permitted to be responsible for any friend or sibling, at any time, when on the water.
- When participating in Club events, helms under the age of 14 must await safety boat escort out to the race start . Under no circumstances should a child under the age of 14 sail out to the race start unaccompanied.
SAILING AREA - All dinghies should return to the Club no later than 5.30pm.
- The designated sailing areas are marked on the sailing area map located outside the Sailing Centre.
STRONG WIND RESTRICTION - To avoid dinghy damage and ensure member’s safety, Club dinghies will NOT be allowed to be hired when the wind speed exceeds 15 knots (Force 4).
- Those with an advanced endorsement will be permitted to sail in up to, but not exceeding, 25 knots of breeze (Force 6).
DAMAGE TO DINGHIES - Under no circumstances are hirers allowed to beach any Club dinghies. However, please note that small anchors for dinghies are available on request.
- Any damage that is found before or caused during hire of the equipment must be reported to the Sailing Centre Staff.
- It is the responsibility of the hirer to look after their hired dinghy and any repairs required will be charged to their account. This includes damage that was not your fault (i.e. another boat crashes into you) the hirer should in this case make personal arrangements with the offender. Normal ‘wear and tear’ is of course expected and will not be charged for.
REMOVAL FROM THE LIST A member's name may be removed from the Approved Helms List under either of the following circumstances: - At the end of a eighteen month period of inactivity in HHYC dinghy sailing.
- If it is deemed by the Sailing Centre Manager or the Chief Instructor that the member concerned is unsafe to be afloat in a sailing dinghy.

Dinghy ManagementSAILING CENTRE GUIDELINES FOR VOLUNTEERS The appropriate version of this document should be issued to and read by all persons directly or indirectly involved with sail training at HHYC. It is particularly applicable to Instructors, Assistant Instructors, Marine staff involved in driving rescue boats and any volunteers who may be involved with sail training from time to time. All persons required to read this document will also be required to sign a copy to indicate that they have done so. Including operating procedures for use of Club Safety Boats and Emergency Action Procedures.
